Registration Guidelines
These guidelines are to help you complete your IED application.
The Application Form should be completed fully and clearly, either in type or in handwritten capital letters in black ink. Please remember that your Application will reflect you and your professionalism.
PROPOSER
The Proposer, who will also be contacted as your first Referee, must have known you for at least two years in a professional capacity and be a corporate member of a recognised professional body. In the case of those applying for membership to the Engineering Design Division the Proposer must be a member of a recognised engineering institution. It is important that the Proposer should countersign any statements on the Application Form which he/she is able to verify.
REFEREES
In addition to the Proposer, who will be your first Referee, one reference is required for Associate (AIED) and Competent Draughting Associate (CDAIED); two are required for Member (MIED) and three for Fellow (FIED).
The Institution will write to all the Referees, who should have at least two years knowledge of the Applicant's work. Ideally they should be corporate members of a recognised professional body/engineering institution, however it is more important that they should be persons who,as a result of their background, are able to give a useful reference. It is advisable to list at least one extra Referee in case any of the Referees cannot be contacted.
At least one Referee should be from the Applicant's present employment, and if such employment has been for less than the stipulated two years this reference is required in addition to those references from persons who have known the Applicant for more than two years.
In the case of Applicants who are self-employed at least one reference should be from someone who has used the Applicant's services.
EDUCATION
List in chronological order the schools, colleges and/or universities attended, the period of attendance at each establishment, subjects studied and awards obtained. The titles of courses, colleges etc should read exactly as they are printed on the certificates/awards obtained. The Applicant is required to make available for inspection all academic certificates and notifications of performance, or authenticated copies thereof, provided they are counter-signed by the Proposer.
MEMBERSHIP OF OTHER PROFESSIONAL BODIES
It is important that you give the name(s) of the body or bodies of which you are a member, the year of election and current grade held, and whether by examination or otherwise. If you are not a member of another body please enter "None".
If you are registered as a CEng, IEng or EngTech through the Engineering Council (UK) please state your registration level and through which institution the Engineering Council (UK) registration fee is currently paid. Also please give your registration number, if known.
PRE-PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
List apprenticeships, drawing/design office and other training in chronological order. If no specific training was undertaken please record all design, engineering, workshop, site and laboratory experience, etc. Give details and state where the training or work was undertaken.
Proper practical training is as important as your academic qualification in the assessment of your Application, and to establish that you qualify for it, it is therefore important that you provide as much information as possible.
The Applicant is required to make available for inspection any training certificates or authenticated copies thereof, provided they are countersigned by the Proposer. These should be sent with the Application Form and educational certificates mentioned in (4) above. If the training has not been certificated, Training Report Forms or Training Log Books, suitably authenticated, may be proffered. Older Applicants may submit Indentures of Apprenticeship, other certification,or formal documentation which satisfactorily detail the nature of training undertaken.
Applicants for MIED who have not been able to participate in a formal training scheme may be eligible for membership if they have had a craft apprenticeship, or a period of workshop, site or laboratory experience relevant to their subsequent work, and are or have been employed in the capacity of an engineering design draughtsman for a period of at least four years.
PROFESSIONAL REVIEW
A Professional Review must be completed by those applying for MIED and AIED. It is on the basis of the Professional Review Report and the subsequent Professional Review interview that your final suitability for membership will be based. It is therefore advisable to carefully read the Professional Review Declaration and Notes enclosed and complete the report in your own form and style in as much detail as possible.
If you have any doubt it is advisable to contact the IED Membership Department by email to sue@ied.org.uk or telephone +44 (0) 1373 822801 to seek advice.
PLEASE NOTE
If you wish to submit a CV, please email it to sue@ied.org.uk noting your application number, it is in addition to the application and Professional Review Report.
It is worth putting a little effort into fully completing the Application Form - it can prevent weeks or months of frustration for yourself, the Institution's secretariat and the Membership Committee.
In the case of transfers from one grade to another, it is often possible to examine the new Application Form in conjunction with the member's previous Application Form. However, many years can elapse between such transfers and the layout of forms may have changed and the information now required may not have been included on an earlier form, also old forms often become damaged or defaced. It is in your interest and that of the staff and Membership Committee, that you fill in the Application Form completely as a document which will stand on its own without reference to previous forms.
