Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the IED newsletter. Winter is upon us and nature is slowing down, but there is still plenty going on in the world of engineering and design.

Events

* On 27 November Manufacturing Network Wales and MaDE are organising a free workshop on 'Steel- the choice of design'. If you want to learn more about the formability of carbon steels, versatility of stainless steel and the application of steel in the construction industry register for this free event, to be held in Cardiff, at www.mnw.org.uk and select Diary of Events.

* The Royal Academy of Engineering are holding a public lecture on 'Energy and Global Security in the 21st Century'. The event will take place at 3 Carlton House Terrace at 3.30pm Tuesday 2 December, is free of charge and places can be booked by contacting faye.whitnall@raeng.org.uk.

* The IED are co-sponsoring a one-day seminar on Skills for Financial Success (Finance for Engineering Managers) with the IMechE. The Seminar is to be held on Thursday 4 December at the IMechE headquarters in London. The event is aimed at providing the fundamentals of financial management for use in an engineering environment. IED members are entitled to register at the reduced IMechE member rate (click member of co-sponsoring organisation on the booking form). Go to www.imeche.org/events/S1415 for more information.

* On the same day, and at the same venue, the IMechE, ICE and IET are holding an evening debate titled 'Faraday, Stephenson and Telford Who's the Greatest?' Actors play the parts of the finest minds in engineering, each will talk about their lives, work and achievements, before the audience decide whose achievements have proved most sustainable. Call for Papers

* The Royal Institution of Naval Architects are inviting papers for their 2009 conference 'Warship 2009: Air power at sea'. Papers are welcome on all aspects of naval air power from designers, builders, equipment manufacturers and operators. The conference is due to be held in London on 17 and 18 June, synopses for proposed papers must be submitted by 13 February. For further information email conference@rina.org.uk.

 

Get Involved

* The House of Commons Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee is undertaking a long-running enquiry into Engineering. Part of the enquiry is an online consultation aimed at young engineers, to gather their views on engineering careers. The forum for comment can be found at http://forums.parliament.uk/young-engineers please feel free to add your comments on issues such as what or who inspired you to consider engineering as a career and what you would do to improve engineering in the UK.

* Taylor and Francis Group have arranged a special subscription rate for IED members to their publication 'Journal of Engineering Design'. The reduced rate for 2009 is £60, to take advantage of this offer email jenny.neophyton@tandf.co.uk, quoting your IED membership number.

* As of 1 January 2009 the contact number for free legal advice helpline for the IED members has changed. The new number will be 01206 366500 - when ringing please quote 'Institution of Engineering Designers' and your membership number. (If you don't know your membership number please ring the office on 01373 822801 or email us at ied@ied.org.uk)

The helpline will provide legal advice on any UK based issue affecting you personally. The advice is free of charge to IED members and completely confidential and covers a range of topics, including:-

- Road traffic accidents
- Employment matters
- Consumer issues
- Wills and Probate
- Tenancy disputes

 

Awards

* The Royal Academy of Engineering are inviting entries for the MacRobert Award 2009. The Award is open to any individual or organisation of any size in the public, private or charitable sectors. Applications are invited for engineering innovations in any area of science, engineering, medicine or technology and will be judged on:-

- Innovation - the successful exploitation of new ideas
- Commercial success
- Benefit to the community

The winning organisation is honoured with a gold medal and each of the individual nominees a bronze medal. There is also a cash prize of £50,000. Submissions should be made electronically at www.raeng.org.uk/prizes/macrobert by 30 January 2009.

 

Goodies

* IED diaries for 2009 are now available on the website. For those who still like to use paper reminders, and those who would like a quick reference hard copy back up of their PDA, the slimline IED diary is available from www.ied.org.uk at the very reasonable sum of £3.00 plus £1.50 post and packing. To order go to the website, click on 'Institution' and 'Shop', the diary is listed in the bestsellers to the right of the page.

* The IED will have a small number of A3 sized 2009 wallcharts available for members within the next few weeks. If you would like a chart please contact alison@ied.org.uk to reserve one to be sent to you.

 

Advanced Warning

* The IED's AGM for 2009 will be held at the Ironbridge Museum in Telford on Saturday 18 July. The AGM will be followed by lunch including presentation of the 2009 IED Awards and tours of the museum facilities and displays.

All are welcome, including family and friends, spaces for the lunch and tours are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment.
