IED membership has two divisions:
- Engineering Design
- Product Design and Technology
Each division has a range of membership grades:
- Student Member - StudIED
- Graduate & Diplomate Member - GradIED/DipIED
- Competent Draughting Associate - CDAIED
- Associate - AIED
- Member - MIED
- Fellow - FIED
The grades are linked to an individual’s qualifications.
In addition, there are a few other requirements to be fulfilled before you can be considered:
Engineering Council Registration
Those accepted into Membership (AIED/MIED/FIED) of the Institution's Engineering Division may apply to have their names recorded on the Engineering Council Register as either Chartered Engineers (CEng), Incorporated Engineers (IEng) or Engineering Technicians (EngTech) depending on the level of the academic qualification they currently hold. Should the Membership Department of the IED consider your application to be at the wrong level, you will be advised immediately.
Exemplifying qualifications
These are the qualifications you should hold to apply for membership of the IED and registration with the Engineering Council where appropriate if you qualified after 1999.
- MEng
- BEng (Hons), BEng, BSc(Hons), BSc
- HNC, HND or ONC
- A shortfall or no post-18 academic qualifications

Equivalents will be considered, including foreign qualifications, Full Tech Certs, or NVQs.
