Work Placements

Work placements part-way through a degree course are an important part of the career development of graduate engineers.

The IED offers a service in support of the placement programmes of the Universities offering placements arising from contacts with IED members and acting as a clearing house whereby Universities can fill places offered to them which they are not able to offer to their own students.

Wayne Honeybun

I am currently studying MSc Design Engineering at Middlesex University and as part of my course and means of further developing my skills, seek to find a 12 week placement within an engineering based company.

The multi disciplinary, IED accredited course encapsulates many aspects of both theoretical and practical engineering, ensuring I have a broad knowledge and skill base to see a project through from concept to production. Before coming to Middlesex I gained a 2:1 in BSc (Hons) Product Design and Engineering at the University of Wales, Institute Cardiff.

I am an extremely enthusiastic and competent individual, with a passion for practical problem solving and hands on design. My main interests lie in automotive, structural, civil and mechanical engineering although I am open to all sectors of engineering and have brief experience of working within a multitude of different engineering based organisations.

I am willing to work anywhere in the UK as well as abroad and hold a British passport as well as a full, clean UK driving licence.

Due to my academic timetable, the placement would need to commence around the 2nd of February 2009 and last for a minimum of 12 weeks during which my entire time and efforts would be directed towards the placement. I have attached my CV for a more comprehensive over view of my background and education.

Ronan Salaün

I am an apprentice engineer in the field of Mechanical Engineering in Nantes France. For my training course, I am required to do a work placement in an international company. I have particularly been attracted by your firm about industrial activity that your practice.

I am studying in the Industrial Engineering Institute (I.T.I.I.) of Pays de la Loire, in the west of France where I am following a three-year course to become a mechanical engineer. With my training, I can adapt to many different sectors of activity. In fact, I can carry out a technical study, adapt a technical solution and carry out overall drawings. I also have skills in computer assisted design and structural analysis behaviour (CATIA V5, AUTOCAD, ABAQUS and MATLAB).

An eight-week placement is a compulsory part of the course but I am very enthusiastic also about the potential for experiencing a different work and general culture. The aim is also to improve my English and obtain the Toeic level necessary to pass my engineering diploma. I would be delighted to be able to spend these two months in your company, contributing to your activity in any way I can. If you are interested in my application for a placement I would be happy to talk to you on the phone about the arrangements and possible small projects I could do for you. I enclose a brochure also of my school (I.T.I.I.).
