Becoming a member
Here you can find out about the different routes to membership of the IED.
IED membership has two divisions:
- Engineering Design
- Product Design and Technology
Each division has a range of membership grades which are linked to an individual’s qualifications:
Student – StudIED
For those studying engineering or design at University or college.
Graduate/Diplomate – GradIED/DipIED
For those who have completed their formal education and are now working to gain the necessary three years work experience.
Competent Draughting Associate – CDAIED
For those who are proficient in the use of CAD and satisfy the standard set by the IED.
Associate – AIED
For those with a minimum of an ONC in a relevant discipline, plus one year professional work experience in a design role.
Member – MIED
For those with a minimum of an ONC plus at least three years professional work experience in a design role.
Fellow – FIED
For members who demonstrate excellence in their profession.
As well as providing proof of the relevant qualifications you will also need to complete a Professional review report and provide details for at least three referees. For more information about how to apply click here.
Engineering Council Registration
Members who are accepted into the IED’s Engineering Division (AIED/MIED/FIED) can apply to have their names recorded on the Engineering Council Register as either Chartered Engineers (CEng), Incorporated Engineers (IEng) or Engineering Technicians (EngTech) depending on the level of their academic qualification. We will advise you if we feel that your application is not at the right level.
The qualifications you should hold if you wish to apply for registration with the Engineering Council as well as membership of the IED include:
MEng
Providing you meet the additional requirements, you should be able to apply for MIED and CEng.
BEng (Hons), BEng, BSc (Hons), BSc
In addition to any one of these qualifications you will also need to demonstrate that you have three years appropriate experience.
Providing you meet the additional requirements, you should be able to apply for MIED and IEng.
HNC, HND or ONC
In addition to any one of these qualifications you will also need to demonstrate that you have three years appropriate experience.
Providing you meet the additional requirements, you will be able to apply for AIED/MIED and EngTech.
Equivalents will be considered, including foreign qualifications, Full Tech Certs, or NVQs.

Chartered Environmentalist
The IED has recently become a licensed member of the Society for the Environment, which means that registration as a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) is now available to suitably qualified members.
